Sean Landry

Sean Landry (born c. 1999) was Vernon Landry’s older son and Elliot James Landry’s paternal half-brother. Sean was four years older than Elliot. He abused Elliot during childhood and adulthood through physical violence, verbal degradation, financial exploitation, theft, and threats. Their contact ended in 2032 after Sean held a loaded gun to Elliot’s head and fired into the wall. Sean was later incarcerated and was still serving his sentence eight years after the assault.

Family Background

Sean was Vernon’s son from a relationship before Vernon’s relationship with Jazmine Landry. Sean and Vernon lived in Montgomery, Alabama, while Jazmine raised Elliot in Pine Hollow. Elliot encountered Sean during visits and weekends with Vernon in Montgomery. The brothers shared the Landry family’s paternal Southern Black Alabama heritage.

Sean blamed Elliot’s existence for Vernon’s separation from Sean’s mother. His abuse began before his drug use and was worsened by it rather than caused by it. Vernon favored Sean, encouraged and joined his bullying of Elliot, dismissed the violence as ordinary conflict between brothers, and sometimes left Elliot alone with him. The earliest documented incident occurred when six-year-old Elliot was pushed from a trampoline. Sean said they had only been playing, and the resulting report was one of several childhood reports that did not produce lasting protection.

Behavior and Communication

Sean was volatile and quick to rage when criticized or confronted about his drug use. His abuse often moved from obscenities and insults to physical violence and from threats to action, separated by periods of relative calm that left Elliot monitoring his mood and movement. Sean projected his own failures onto Elliot, calling him lazy while depending on Elliot’s labor and stupid while showing no care for the household or Elliot’s safety. He also called Elliot worthless and a burden. Sean mocked Elliot’s body and appetite, took his food while accusing him of overeating, and humiliated him for snoring and gasping in his sleep. When Elliot shivered in an inadequate hoodie during cold weather, Sean told him, “You’d think your blubber would keep you warm.”

During childhood and adolescence, Sean hit Elliot with his hands and other objects and left visible bruises and injuries. In adulthood, he beat and cut Elliot, used an anti-gay slur against him, and stole or traded Elliot’s belongings for drug money. Elliot sometimes woke to Sean standing over him with a knife against his throat or a gun against his head. He kept possessions locked in his car to keep Sean from taking them.

Sean had an addiction involving hard drugs and sometimes became violent while high. The addiction worsened substantially between Elliot’s adolescence and their adult co-residence and continued without treatment. Sean directed the money he obtained toward drugs. Elliot’s presence kept the Brownsville apartment supplied with food and prevented overdue bills; Elliot also cooked, and Sean ate the food without thanking him. By adulthood, Sean’s violence had become colder and more calculated. Elliot’s lack of safe housing and financial reserve kept him within Sean’s reach.

Abuse of Elliot Landry

Sean’s violence toward Elliot began in childhood and continued into Elliot’s late twenties. Elliot kept a knife beneath his pillow for more than a year because he could not sleep in the same residence without a means of defense.

Broken Wrist and Hospital Visit

In winter 2019, when Elliot was sixteen and Sean was twenty, Sean grabbed Elliot’s left wrist and demanded that he scream and call himself nothing. Elliot remained silent. Sean continued twisting until Elliot’s distal radius broke, then panicked and blamed him, asking, “Why didn’t you stop me?”

Sean drove Elliot to St. James Hospital ER, completed the intake paperwork, and left before staff could question him. Nurse Carleen recognized that the injury and Elliot’s behavior did not fit an accidental fall. Social worker Deja Brooks documented Elliot’s disclosure and filed reports with law enforcement and Child Protective Services while Jazmine stayed with him. Charges were filed, but Sean received probation.

Brownsville Apartment

In 2032, financial desperation left Elliot living with Sean in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Elliot slept on a mattress on the floor that was too small for his body and again kept a knife beneath his pillow. His CPAP machine, which treated his obstructive sleep apnea, mysteriously stopped working. Elliot strongly suspected that Sean had damaged it; Sean denied responsibility. Insurance barriers prevented Elliot from replacing it, leaving him without prescribed treatment while Sean humiliated him for snoring and gasping.

Approximately six months before Jacob hired Elliot, Sean nearly beat him unconscious after Elliot mentioned that the apartment was out of paper towels. Sean strangled him until he lost consciousness, allowed him to regain consciousness, and repeated the strangulation. Elliot hid the marks on his neck beneath winter scarves.

Elliot began working for Jacob Keller in 2032 and gained financial stability, but he continued living in Brownsville for approximately four months. The job did not initially include a room in Jacob’s home. When Elliot stayed away from the apartment, Sean sent repeated messages demanding to know where he was and accusing him of thinking he was better because of his “babysitting gig with that white boy.”

Gun Assault, Escape, and Incarceration

After Elliot returned from an Italy performance trip with Jacob, Sean confronted him in the Brownsville apartment. Sean pressed the barrel of a loaded gun against Elliot’s temple and told him that neither his boss nor anyone else would care if he died. While Elliot pleaded for his life, Sean pulled the trigger and fired a bullet into the wall several feet away.

Elliot left around midnight with a half-zipped duffel bag. He drove without a destination, parked near the East River, and spent the night in his car because he feared that Sean would find him if he slept elsewhere. Elliot tried to report for work the next morning. Jacob recognized that he was fleeing violence and offered him the second bedroom in the Park Laurel apartment without rent or conditions. Elliot moved out within days.

With support from Jacob and Logan Weston, Elliot filed charges and permanently ended contact with Sean. Sean was incarcerated and remained in prison eight years later.

Effect on Elliot

Sean’s abuse contributed to Elliot’s hypervigilance, fear-disrupted sleep, threat monitoring, and difficulty believing that he deserved safety. The repeated descriptions of Elliot as lazy, stupid, worthless, and burdensome reinforced shame already attached to his disabilities, body, and support needs. The wrist fracture, the unexplained CPAP failure, the strangulation, and the gunshot remained distinct parts of that history rather than one generalized account of family conflict.

Elliot’s permanent estrangement from Sean allowed him to build relationships in which housing, care, and safety were not conditional on accepting violence. Sean had no further contact with him after the 2032 assault and charges.

Vernon Landry

Vernon was Sean’s father. He favored Sean, encouraged and joined his bullying of Elliot, minimized the violence, and failed to enforce consequences that could have protected Elliot.

Elliot Landry

Elliot was Sean’s younger paternal half-brother and the target of his long-term abuse. Their relationship ended permanently after the 2032 gun assault.

Jazmine Landry

Jazmine was Elliot’s mother and Vernon’s former partner, not Sean’s mother. She made repeated efforts to protect Elliot and supported his disclosure after the wrist fracture.
